Sunday is Morning Star’s 12th Anniversary Celebration and also its
final service. If that sounds bittersweet, it is. For the last twelve years,
Cecil and I have invested in the community and many lives through the ministry
of MSC. We have enjoyed this journey! But the time for
change has come. This is a new, exciting twist in the history of our church. It
isn’t what we had planned, but it is so much better than we ever thought
possible. After all, God’s plans are always best for us and for His Kingdom.

know the leadership team and people at Grace Church in Fremont. Grace Church is
a part of our network of churches (Next Generation Churches). To make a very
long story short…God has done some incredibly, miraculous stuff over these
months to bring our two churches together in partnership. This past Sunday,
Grace Church voted unanimously to select me as their new lead pastor, which was
done with the understanding that the congregation and staff of MSC would also
join me in becoming a part of the Grace Church family!

final service celebration at 10:35am. I will be sharing my story of how God has
brought this incredible partnership together. Getting to know the many
wonderful people at Grace Church has been an incredibly meaningful experience,
yet what makes this change even more meaningful is that I will be able to keep
the relationships that we’ve built through the years at MSC. I am so excited to
pastor this new church family!

All the major construction projects are done except for stage, bathroom remodel, exterior double door entry, and exterior deck and ramp. Every part of the building received at least one coat of paint and the offices, nursery, kitchen, and main worship walls are completely done! Which means, we can start on flooring in the offices this week and should be able to start moving things in there by next Saturday. Hopefully our first service in the building will be March 30 and our Grand Opening/Anniversary Service will be April 6. So mark that date on your calendar to come and celebrate with us. There are already five that have expressed the desire to be baptized at that service and there will be a catered lunch to follow.
Huge, huge thank you to all the volunteers who have served so faithfully. If I were to guess, I think our volunteers will have saved us close to $100,000 by the time the project is finished. I love our church and how all of you have stepped up to give and serve!
There was so much old building material to toss (insulation, ceiling tiles, cabinets) that we completely filled the 40 cu ft dumpster and then some. Yesterday the walls started going up and I've included shots of the media booth and half wall in the new nursery. Also we come texturing done in the offices. We believe we are still on track for holding our first service the first Sunday in March. We should be ready for a large work day on Saturday, February 8. This will be a work day for everyone including landscaping, painting, flooring and exterior work. More details will be announced on Sunday.
We weren't sure where we were going to go. Doors seemed to open and then quickly close. But God was faithful to provide us with a new home. In November, we signed a new 5 year lease with the Newark Unified School District for our new facility at 37490 Birch Street. For the last 6 weeks we have raised funds to remodel the new facility and today the work got started! I am so thankful for the team of people who have stepped up to help with the remodel. Big, big thank you to Greg and Miles Zimmerman. At their own expense, they brought a team of guys from their business (Miles and Sons) to start demolition.

Today, we took all the kids over to Love At First Slice loveatfirstslicepizza.com (they give us an awesome deal and have really good pizzas as well). Usually we have lots of fun activities and then have someone give a short testimony but today the focus was on the talk. It was really cool to get to share with about 30 Junior Highers that they are important and valuable. Not because of who they are or what they can do but simply because they were created by God and made in His image. Big thanks to Drew for leading this club. He is doing a great job. And big thanks to Carol and Joshua for faithfully volunteering. Also, don't want to forget our really awesome high schoolers that volunteer as well!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11427898582710882714noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2933458659014100524.post-49743381450854241632013-09-11T12:37:00.001-07:002013-09-20T08:32:40.873-07:00The Pain of Pastoring

One of my best friends recently posted this on his blog. It really captures how I find myself feeling so many times. So I thought I would just repost his thoughts and write "ditto."

For some time I have had some thoughts rolling around on my heart that I am going to articulate for my own processing and also as a way for me to share my heart with you. I am thinking that I will take a couple posts and share a few different parts of pastoring that cause me pain. I also believe that you may be able to easily associate with similar pain in your own lives.

One of the biggest pains of pastoring is when people leave the church! Just earlier today I left a voicemail for a friend who used to attend Parkview. Not only was I close with this guy but so were our families close. I watched the family experience Life Change, in fact, I recall baptizing every member of the family at different times. I also remember when the husband lost his job…I remember walking that road…helping him be ok with being lied about and fired without cause…he moved to another state. About a week ago I called a friend who used to attend Parkview. He is one of the most godly men I know. I saw incredible leadership potential within this man and prayed we would minister together for years…he moved to another state. On a regular basis I see posts and comments from former Parkview congregants on Facebook. Just today I saw a funny post from a former church leader, they said something about their son, who was friends with my son…they moved…my son cried that day.

Just in case you wonder if the only pain that is felt is when someone moves – that is not the case. On other occasions people have left without moving and that hurts too – sometimes more. Here are a few things that come to mind:

they leave and can’t really explain why

they leave because God is leading

they leave because somebody has hurt them

they leave because their spouse is pushing the issue

they leave because they quit on God

they leave without saying anything

they leave and don’t want to meet and discuss

they leave because they have other needs

I am not sure I care to continue to think of more reasons or situations

I am friends with a number of pastors and some at a very deep level. They all feel the same way and have experienced all of the above…I am not alone. Without crying and whinning I would state that I have something unique that I deal with that many, not all, of my pastor friends do not – I pastor in a city that has an extreme amount of turnover. Palm Coast is transient unlike many other cities – if you live here you know what I mean, if you don’t I will spare you the details.

To be clear, I am not blaming those who leave, nor do I fault them. I am just talking about my feelings – it hurts; if it didn’t then I guess I should get another job. I believe the Lord gives the shepherd a shepherd’s heart. I also greatly appreciate all those who have grieved with me in their departure.

Better to have loved and “lost” than to have never loved at all.

The kids are back in the school routine. And I'm finally getting back on routine (like posting on my blog). It's been a while so I thought catching up on everything would be a good idea.

Mega Sports Camp - We had our largest group of kids 70+. I think the best part for me was seeing how many great volunteers gave their time to make this event happen. I'm guessing that it took about 500 volunteer hours to make this happen. But every hour was worth it. We have seen a few of these families come back to church a few times and been able to connect many of the kids with our children's ministry.

Vacation - I always plan our end of summer vacation right after Mega Sports Camp because Cecil and I are always desperately in need of a break when the week is over. For the 6th time we headed out to Angels Camp, CA. People always ask us, "What's out in Angel's Camp?" The answer is "Nothing." That's why we go :) Our week if filled with swimming, eating, watching tv/movies, walking around downtown, and not much more. This is one vacation that always refreshes and renews us. I look forward to the slow mornings drinking coffee on patio overlooking the golf course and getting to catch up with Cecil.

End of Summer BBQ & Baptism - As aways, baptisms are really the highlight of our ministry. It is always a great joy to watch as others proclaim the Lordship of Jesus and publicly identify themselves as His followers. This one was especially meaningful as I was able to baptize a good friend of mine who has attended our church from its very beginning. When he first started attending he was far from Jesus but over the years God has worked in his heart through relationships, sermons, small groups, and lots of conversations. I think that baptizing him was one of the most powerful moments I've ever enjoyed!

Church Building - as many of you have heard our current location is being sold. We have been praying for the past 6 months that God would open the door for another facility. This Sunday I shared a few of the details about a possible site. I believe that God has answered our prayers and opened up a fabulous opportunity. This new site will require a lot of work upfront but the end result should be awesome.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11427898582710882714noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2933458659014100524.post-62261374975513358552013-08-03T20:52:00.000-07:002013-08-03T20:52:16.421-07:00Back 2 School BBQ

Today was our 5th Annual Back 2 School BBQ at Newark Community Park. Over these years, we have slowly built relationships with people that would not normally come to our church. It's nice to hear people call me Pastor Josh even though I only get to see them once a year at this BBQ. I believe the Spirit of God uses events like this to whisper, "You are loved...You are important to me" to those that attend.

To everyone who volunteered…

I just wanted to express my thanks. Today was a perfect example of what we can accomplish when we work as a team. It takes a lot of volunteers to put together such a large event and you made that possible. I know that you had other things that you could have done today (some of them were probably important), but you took the time to volunteer. Because of your involvement we touched over 300 people with God's love, handed out over 100+ backpacks, and signed up 28 kids for Mega Sports Camp! We couldn't have done it without you. Thanks for being on the team!

Everyone loves the idea of being part of a church that really serves the community, but so often we fail to prioritize our own time to make that a priority. I'm really glad for the people of MSC that not only talk about Jesus but put action behind their beliefs.

See you tomorrow at church!

Like most people, I want my house to look good when I have guests and since we were planning to BBQ, I knew the back patio needed some TLC. It just so happened that my wife mentioned the day before that my eight year old daughter, Alanna, was looking to make some extra money. So I decided to hire some help. Over the years I have always tried to involve the kids in outdoor chores like weeding, pruning, and sweeping with varying degrees of success. Most of the time it really wasn't worth the hassle. But today...was different. I pruned, she picked up. I used the blower, she swept. She watered the tree, the brown spots in the lawn, and put everything away herself! It really saved me time to have her involved.
In many ways, that's how many things in life work. Last night, we had the quarterly discipleship mentor's meeting at our home. I remember when we started the discipleship program (we really didn't even know we were starting something), sometimes it seemed like such a huge investment of time meeting with people 1 on 1. They would take one step forward and then two steps back. Sometimes people dropped out, moved away, or went through life changes that kept them from finishing. But slowly we gave birth to a new generation of leaders at MSC. Leaders that had my passion for discipleship, leaders that understood our values, leaders that "got it"! As we went around the room last night and shared our struggles, our worries, our heartaches, and our joys...it was worth it! The American Church has by and large become a spectator sport. We go, fill our seat on Sunday, give some money, and maybe even volunteer once or twice a month but by and large true life change doesn't happen on Sunday morning, it doesn't happen in a small group program, it doesn't happen quickly, and definitely doesn't happen alone. My experience has taught me that true life change happens as we get serious about sharing life with each other around the values of Jesus. We are willingly transparent and accountable, we willingly encourage and correct, and we willingly make time to be together. I'm so grateful for the community that God is creating at MSC. Thanks for being a part of the team!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11427898582710882714noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2933458659014100524.post-11357958035760409152013-06-02T19:14:00.001-07:002013-06-02T19:14:26.560-07:00Church In The Park...What A Blast!

We cancelled both morning services and held one outdoor service at Newark Community Park. Our purpose was to provide another opportunity to take our church out in the community. Well...it turned out great. First I have to thank everyone who help make the day possible. Big thanks goes to Drew, Barb, Linda, and Carrie for their help in organizing all the setup, food, and clean up. Of course there were many volunteers who came early, cooked, and stayed late. I especially want to thank Greg since he was the first to arrive and the last to leave. The best part is that we connected with 6 new families that were invited by others in our church family! Here is one quick story that one of the guests shared with me. She said that about a week ago she was sitting at McDonalds thinking about God, the journey of her life, and some of the difficulty things she was currently going to...someone from our church took the time to introduce themselves and handed her an invitation to attend Church in the Park! She told me that she felt like that invitation was an answer to prayer. So to everyone who made the day possible, thanks again...you are awesome!

The last few months have been incredibly busy but also incredibly great! Where do I start??? I guess I will go in chronological order.
I'm so glad we waited until the kids were older to go. They were able to ride all the rides and it was a great bonding time for us and the kids. Alanna made a really cool observation while we were riding Pirates of Caribbean. We were all sitting on the same row in the boat and she said, "I really like it when we are all together as family doing something fun." Big reminder for me...make time to have fun with your family.
The conference was decent but the best part was getting to see friends and enjoy time as a couple. We got to hang out with our good friends Greg and Denise Peters. Even though we live so far apart, Greg and Denise hold a really, really special place in our heart. Greg would faithfully check in on me in the early years of church planting when things were tough and lonely. I wish we lived closer because its always great to hang out. After the conference I visited with my Grandmother and Aunt in Tampa, FL. Then Cecil and I got an extended weekend near Ft. Myers.
3) Big, big thank you to our parents for watching the kids for the 10 days we were gone! We know how lucky we are to have such involved grandparents.
As I sit in my office and think back over the years, it's cool to see how God is in control, how He leads us to the future He has for us, and how He always provides our needs. In just a few minutes I will get up to preach my 500+ Sunday morning sermon and I still can't think of a thing I would rather talk about than Jesus. I'm blessed to lead a community of people that are serious about following Christ. Jesus did not come to give us religion or a new set of rules to keep. He came to replace our self-centered existence with His values and ethics. He graciously invites us to share in His story. God's story is big, eternal, and redemptive and our story can be too if we join with Him! It's a lot of fun being a part of God's story at MSC.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11427898582710882714noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2933458659014100524.post-52716913282836980962013-02-28T12:30:00.004-08:002013-02-28T12:30:46.455-08:0010 Years...And Counting

It was 2002. My wife and I made the long drive across the United States, from Jacksonville, FL to Newark, CA. When we started Morning Star, I was 22. Wow...time has flown by. It will be Sunday, March 17 that we celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the church. For friends and family that are in the area, we would love to have you come celebrate with us. All the details are below.
But today was one of those really nice, relaxing days. Ethan was at a birthday party with my wife (thank you babe) so it was just Alanna and me from 9:30am to about 3:30pm. We got some school and house projects done and then we curled up on the couch to watch a few PBS cooking shows. Then we were inspired to cook sticky buns. They're actually edible which is surpising since I totally forgot the measurements and eyeballed everything :)
Sometimes its hard having such cool family members to hang out with...you want to spend time with all of them but sometimes you don't get as much time as you want.

When you read this, I hope you...slow down...and enjoy your family!
But in actuality they just look really weird. Hope it makes you laugh a little.
We had two meanginful Christmas Services at the church. The Birthday Party for Jesus was an absolute blast and best of all I really think it left a lasting impression on the kids that participated. Then last night's Christmas Eve Service was awesome. As usual, the band did a fabulous job with both traditional carols and songs with a modern twist. I am so blessed to pastor such wonderful people. Our staff, leadership team, and congregation are so much fun to partner with in sharing the message of Jesus in our community. We also announced the results of our Christmas offering. The goal was $5,000 but we ended up with $8,300! So many of you gave sacrficially and generously!

On Sunday at 10:35am, we have our annual Christmas Party for Jesus (Only 1 service this Sunday). This service was begun a few years ago as a way of teaching our children the reality and importance of Christmas. We serve cake, blow out candles, and have a great time celebrating the birth of Jesus. Both the young and the young at heart will find this service meaningful.

Then on Christmas Eve at 6:00pm we have our traditional candlelight service. Join us for lots of hot chocolate and cookies. The band will be playing your favorite carols and there will be a gift for each child. Childcare is provided for children 0-4 years of age.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11427898582710882714noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2933458659014100524.post-79176612791467470192012-12-16T08:27:00.002-08:002012-12-16T08:28:02.700-08:00My thoughts regarding the tragedy in ConnecticutI first heard the news around 10:00am when my smart phone vibrated an alert from CNN. I followed the story throughout the entire day as new details were released. I talked with friends as we waited outside our school to pick up our children. My first thoughts are "God, Why?" Innocent children and heroic teachers, lives ended in a flash. Then in the sadness of the moment, I put myself in these parents shoes and I got a small taste of their despair and hopelessness. So what help is there for these grieving, broken families...I certainly have no answers. There is nothing that can be said, done, or given that can in any way repair the devastation that has come on their lives. I must admit that for a few moments I have my own doubts about the reality of God and his love. How could God allow this? If anyone in society deserves protection it is innocent children. But then I remember that the very fact that I am so saddened and outraged by this tragedy is proof that God exists. The fact that we (humanity) are made in God's image is why this is a tragedy. We are not just some highly evolved animals as some would suggest. We are made in his image and therefore we and life are precious. So how do we respond to this mess?

First, we trust and have faith in God that...He will bring about justice for these innocent lives, that He sees beyond what we see and is in control, and that He will make all things right one day.

Second, we remember that eternity is real. Every person is made for eternity. If this life alone is the beginning and end, then we all have no hope. Heaven is real. It is place of no tears, no fear, no tragedies...So as followers of Jesus we pray, "Come Lord Jesus Come!" Only Christ can bring about the change in this world that we so desperately need.

Lastly, we value life and don't take it for granted. Hug your kids, play with them, enjoy life...we don't know when it will be gone. Every day families endure these types of tragedies but they don't get the media coverage. In cities like Oakland, families are torn apart by violence almost every day. We have no guarantees in this life so don't take this life for granted...

This past Saturday was our 7th Annual Volunteer Christmas Party. It all started in 2005 with just a handful of people. Back when Cecil and I began this tradition we had about 12 people join us. Well...little did I know that 7 years later it would turn into a party that would feed 70+ people. Thankfully we have a great team at our house and dispite the fact that I bought the wrong type of green beans (note to self: French Style is not the same as French Cut), we all managed to pull it off. Below are some of the exciting photos.
